MINED MUSIC: musical innovation

 Yo-Yo Ma and Lil Buck

MINED MUSIC is a new way of musical expression.  As this video shows, it is the perfect and meaningful combination of the classical and modern. The many-faceted career of cellist Yo-Yo Ma is testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal.

  1. Can you "unpack" Mined Music on the basis of what this video reveals? How does video reveal mined music? How is this different than simply modern dance, or ballet for that matter, and what does this combination of music and movement reveal about the music and how is the performer expanded? This is an excellent example, but why? How do we look for other evidence of Mined Music? What does "mined" mean in this instance? Does "mined" relate to "mind"?

    1. Most of people believe that classical art is isolated from modern art. Yo-Yo-Ma is a cellist, but Lil Buck practices a kind of dance called jookin'. They are entirely different style characteristics. It is hard to image the cooperation effects. But through this video I find that art is communicating, and it is interlinked and complementary among various categories. We need to discover them, and use them.
